Cyber Security Initiatives Update

Hi Everyone,

In our ongoing efforts to strengthen our Cyber Security here at Shaw we are implementing several new security controls, as well as new security software on all our computers.

The new security software works like traditional antivirus software in that it protects all our computers from threats both locally and from the internet. The difference is that this new software does much more than traditional antivirus software, in that it not only looks for known viruses, but also looks at how we use our computers. This software also comes with a dedicated team of security experts that will be monitoring our systems 24/7/365. If something is happening on one of our systems that looks bad, the software will alert this team of experts who will review the activity and act on it accordingly.

The important thing is that we will now have access to a group of cyber security experts that we can work with as an extension of our existing internal team.

Additionally, we are going to be pushing out some new security policies to support our new security software. These policies are best practices in the industry and will be rolled out to all our computers effective immediately.

  1. Computer timeout

    1. All computers will implement a 15 min lockout after no activity. This ensures that if you leave your system for a length of time it will lock itself so unauthorized persons will not have ready access to your data (email, documents, etc.). It will be a simple matter of logging back into your system when you return to continue working.

  2. Users having too many privileges on local computers.

    1. We have been running audits in our environment using this new software and have found that the way our computers are setup is not the most secure. Our users have too much access and as such this opens the doors to bad software being able to infect our computers much too easily. Therefore, we will be changing this so that our users only have as much access as is needed to do their work.

If any of these initiatives causes any operational issues for anyone, please reach out immediately to the servicedesk@shawgroupltd.com and we will work with you to get things back in working order.

I would also like to thank you all for your continued support as we work to ensure our technology environment is as safe as possible. We will continue to provide updates as we work towards making our work environment as safe as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, or any other IT initiative please feel free to reach out to me directly to discuss.

Thanks

Steve
