Celebrating Pride Month

Good morning,

As you know, the month of June is recognized and celebrated as Pride Month. We want to take a moment and ensure our employees understand what that means and why it is important to acknowledge Pride month. If you are a manager who has employees without e-mail, please discuss at Toolbox meetings this week.

What is Pride Month?

When you think of ‘Pride’, you probably imagine celebrations and a rainbow of colours, but something you might not know is that PRIDE stands for ‘Promote Respect, Inclusion and Dignity for Everyone’. Pride is celebrated each JUNE to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in the USA where protestors fought back against the harassment suffered by the LGBTQ+ community at the hands of the police, and although it was originally a one-day event, it grew to attract millions of people all over the world celebrating each year.

Pride didn’t start out as a celebration it started as a riot led by LGBTQ+ people . It’s about the people who were told to give up or hide who they truly are. It’s about the warriors that came before the celebrations, parades, and parties.

It’s important to recognize Pride month in the workplace and acknowledge the accomplishments of the gay rights movement and our brave LGBTQ advocates. It’s about the people in the LGBTQ community and our allies who fight and continue to fight for equality.

It’s about accepting others, without judgment.

Thank you and Happy Pride!
